Hugo Beck Mechanical Engineering GmbH & Co. KG:
Hugo Beck Mechanical Engineering, a manufacturer of packaging technology, is continuously working to further develop its products toward more sustainable packaging technology. Its objective was therefore to use technology from SEW-EURODRIVE to replace the pneumatic systems previously used in the flowpack X and flowpack R FFS machines with electric actuators. In addition, early fault detection and intelligent energy management were to be implemented. All with the objective of ultimately making the packaging machine a compressed-air-free, modular, and hybrid flowpack solution suitable for both paper-based packaging materials and film packaging.
The horizontal FFS machine, which was previously powered by compressed air, was automated using the “StarterSET 616” base package from SEW-EURODRIVE and extensive extensions such as Power and Energy Solutions and safety technology. In the process, the flowpack X’s pneumatic system was completely replaced by electric actuators and enhanced with intelligent energy management. The result: a machine with very low energy consumption. Perfectly coordinated software and hardware packages make the StarterSET a comprehensive automation solution.
Intelligent Energy Management
In connection with the MOVIKIT® software modules from SEW-EURODRIVE, the new energy storage system enables intelligent energy management. This stabilizes the power supply and allows for the bridging of short-term voltage dips. In addition, peak loads are reduced. The key advantage: In the event of a prolonged power outage, the horizontal FFS machine is brought to a controlled stop. This allows the flowpack X machine to be used even when the grid is unstable or a power outage is expected. The reduction in peak loads offers yet another benefit: The cross section of the power supply line could be significantly reduced compared to the previous model. The connected load and the machine’s total energy consumption also decreased significantly.

Electric Actuators Replace Pneumatics
Until now, movements such as cutting and clamping in the flowpack R packaging machine were traditionally performed using compressed air. Stepper motors are now used for this purpose, controlled by the new bus terminal from SEW-EURODRIVE’s I/O system portfolio. They make it possible to completely eliminate the need for pneumatics. And by replacing the compressed-air-powered actuators, maintenance of these components is no longer required. The horizontal FFS machine from Hugo Beck can now be integrated into the production environment more easily and flexibly. This also reduces energy costs.
Development and commissioning times shortened
The use of a StarterSET—a complete and perfectly coordinated basic package of software and hardware “made by SEW-EURODRIVE”—made it possible: Despite the significant modifications, the development and commissioning times for the packaging machine were reduced by two months, thereby minimizing them.
Short distances and on-site support are clear advantages. After all, despite the considerable reconfigurations, we've been able to reduce the development times for our new and sustainable flowpack X and flowpack R packaging machine. We're already looking forward to upcoming projects with SEW‑EURODRIVE.Timo Kollmann, managing director at Hugo Beck Maschinenbau
I'm proud we were able to both provide and utilize all the components for fully automating this sophisticated packaging machines – and all from a single source.Jack Soreck, field sales engineer at SEW-EURODRIVE
