What is a gear unit?

A gear unit is needed to convert the torque and rotational speed of an upstream electric motor so that they fulfil the drive technology requirements of a user. For this reason, the gear unit is the central component of a gearmotor.

How does a gear unit work?

Depending on the design, size and gear unit stages, a gear unit the rotational speed of a motor to a slower or faster speed. The resulting speed ratio i of the input speed to the output speed is therefore one of the important parameters of a gear unit. How powerful a gear unit and what loads it can handle depends on the maximum torque, measured in the physical unit Newton metres [Nm].

What types of encoders are there?

Gear units differ in the way in which they transmit the power flow; and this results in the three basic types: parallel shaft gear units, right-angle gear units and planetary gear units.

With parallel shaft gear units and planetary gear units the driving and driven shafts lie in one direction (in one plane). The power transmission is therefore linear. Parallel shaft gearboxes are available in the mounting positions spur gearboxes or flat gears.

A special form are the planetary gear units represent a special form. In these, power transmission is coaxial. The rotational speed and torque of the input shaft - the central sun gear - are transmitted via three or more rotating planet gears to an outer annulus gear (output end) and transformed. The special feature is that the input shaft and output shaft move in the same direction. In combination with a servomotor Servo planetary gearmotors offer particularly high dynamics and precision.

In right-angle gear units, on the other hand, the drive and output shafts are perpendicular to each other - with the result that the flow of force is deflected at right angles. There are three types of right-angle gear units. These include Bevel gear units, worm gear units and, exclusively from SEW-EURODRIVE, the SPIROPLAN®-right-angle gear unit.

Our quotation: The right gear unit from our modular design for every application

With a portfolio of all common gear unit types and a wide range of sizes, SEW-EURODRIVE provides you with a comprehensive, modular design. In combination with our modular design for motoring operations and other components, this results in millions of possible combinations. This means that you will find the gearmotor perfectly tailored to your requirements for almost every conceivable application - regardless of whether you choose one of our standard gear units, a servo gear unit, a stainless steel gear unit or an explosion-protected gear unit.

Standard gear units

You need robust and reliable gear units for your production and logistics? Then our standard gearboxes are the right choice for you. Choose between different gearbox types in many sizes and with a maximum torque of up to 50,000 Nm. You can choose from

Stainless steel gearbox

In the cleaning-intensive hygiene areas of the food and beverage industry gear units often come into contact with aggressive acids and alkalis. Our stainless steel gearboxes are robust, durable, maintainable and specially and specially customised for such applications. High-quality stainless steel housings with cleaning-optimised surfaces make these gear units resistant to chemicals and dirt.

Explosion-protected gear units

If, due to the type of production, systems and machines are exposed to an environment with air-gas or air-dust mixtures, strict the strictest explosion protection guidelines apply worldwide due to the hazards involved. This naturally includes the associated drive technology. For this reason, we also offer most of our standard gearboxes and servo gear units in explosion-protected designs - compliant with the most important directives and standards. compliant with the most important directives and standards for the global marketfrom ATEX to IECEx and HazLoc-NA®.

Can you find the solution?

In helical gear units, the input shaft (motor) and output shaft (gear unit) are in line. They are also referred to as parallel shaft gear units. Helical gearmotors are the most commonly used classic gearmotors.

Our helical gear or helical gearmotor stands for the number 4!

Similar to helical gearboxes, parallel shaft gearboxes are also known as parallel shaft gearboxes: Power transmission is parallel to the axis, but the output shaft is offset downwards. Flat gearmotors are therefore ideal for installation in confined spaces.

Our flat gearbox or flat gearmotor stands for the number 10!

Bevel gearboxes go 90° round the corner. They belong to the "genus" of right-angle gear units, as their drive and output shafts are arranged perpendicular to each other. The power flow can therefore be deflected at right angles. Our bevel gearboxes have particularly wear-free gearing. This increases efficiency and, as a result, saves energy costs.

Our bevel gearbox or helical-bevel gearmotor stands for the number 2!

Well? What is the solution to the riddle?

Have you figured it out? Congratulations!

The super number is:
