What is a servo gear unit?

Like all gear units servo gear units serve as converters of torque and rotational speed and are therefore the central component of every servo gearmotor. The special feature of a servo gear unit: Thanks to its high torsional rigidity, combined with very low to constant rotational clearance, it enables extremely high acceleration and high torques.. System operators whose applications require high positioning accuracy, short cycle times, exact rotational speeds, high processing speeds and maximum dynamics can therefore not do without servo gear units around.

How do servo gear units work?

A servo gear unit reduces the rotational speed of a motor. Depending on the arrangement and mode of operation of its gearing and gear unit stages, it transmits the power flow in different ways. The most important parameters of a servo gear unit therefore include the gear ratio iIt indicates the ratio of the input speed (motor side) to the output speed (system side). Low backlash processing and optimized gearing ensure that servo gear units are capable of higher overhung loads than standard gearboxes and to transmit high acceleration torques at high rotational speeds.

What types of servo gear units are there?

In industrial drive technology, the most common types are servo gear units in the form of coaxial gear units / planetary gear units or right-angle gear units / bevel gear units in use.

  • Servo planetary gear units always transmit the power flow coaxially. At their centre is the sun gear, which rotates in the direction of rotation and at the rotational speed of the motor. Three or more planet gears run around this sun gear, transmitting the absorbed force to the outer annulus gear on the output end. This design means that the input shaft and the output shaft move in the same direction, i.e. they have the same direction of rotation.
  • In contrast to this, the gearing in a helical-bevel servo gear unit deflects the flow of force at right angles. This means that the input shaft and output shaft are perpendicular to each other and the direction of rotation is opposite.
