Capability classes

With a large selection of encoders, you can control your drive and thus your system according to your requirements:

  • Built-in encoders (optimally integrated into the motor without additional length) or add-on encoders (with numerous available electrical interfaces)
  • Incremental encoders for feedback of a position change with the common electrical interfaces TTL (transistor-transistor logic), HTL (high-voltage transistor logic) and SinCos (sine-cosine)
  • Single and multiturn absolute encoders for feedback of an absolute angular position with the common electrical interfaces HIPERFACE® or SinCos combined with SSI (synchronous serial interface) or RS485
  • Encoders with an addendum or fully digital interface (e.g. SinCos incremental encoders or absolute encoders) are supplied with an electronic nameplate filled in by SEW-EURODRIVE for simple, safe, convenient and fast startup.

In applications with control tasks, the optimum interaction of the individual system components is particularly important. The motors in particular must react precisely to the specifications of the drive electronics. We supply you with the encoder systems required for this.

These encoders enable the detection of positions or position changes and their feedback to the drive electronics. With absolute value encoders, you save valuable time during system initialisation.

Encoders: realise drive control tasks with clearance

The categorisation into capability classes defines the functionality of the encoder system, regardless of the drive system in question. These are divided into basic class, medium class and high class. This makes it possible to find a customised solution for your drive task.

Add-on encoders are encoder systems purchased by SEW-EURODRIVE from renowned manufacturers that optimally meet our requirements for performance, accuracy and standardisation.

They are available for all series of asynchronous motors, synchronous motors and linear motors.

Add-on encoders are always used when different electrical interfaces need to be available in our modular design and when special characteristics such as explosion protection and functional safety are required.

Like our built-in encoders, add-on encoders can be flexibly combined with our frequency inverters and open-loop controls. The modular design from SEW-EURODRIVE therefore provides a quick solution to your requirements.

  • We can meet your requirements for various signal interfaces for connection to electronics with our standardised mechanical attachment of encoders from well-known manufacturers.
  • The required interface (SinCos, TTL, HTL, SSI, HIPERFACE®, Hiperface DSL®, EnDat2.2) are available as incremental, singleturn or multiturn absolute encoders for asynchronous motors in sizes 71 to 315 and synchronous motors in sizes 40 to 112.
  • Would you like a specific encoder from a manufacturer of your choice to be supplied or fitted to our drives? We offer almost all mechanical interfaces and mounting types for a wide range of encoders. It goes without saying that third-party encoders can also be fitted as customised solutions.

for asynchronous motors

Unique are the built-in encoders for asynchronous motors of the DR.. series are unique.: They are available in basic and mid-range versions and are optimally integrated into the motoring operation. We thus avoid the additional lengths caused by encoder mounting.

If you use a standard MOVITRAC® advanced inverter, for example, you can realise applications for which you previously needed a rapid/creep speed changeover with initiator evaluation.

for synchronous motors

Also in our synchronous motors of the CMP... and CM3C... series. series of synchronous motors also utilise built-in encoders in an advantageous way. In connection with our single-cable interface MOVILINK® DDI single-cable interface and the MOVI-C® modular automation system® automation kit, the drive can be digitalised in addition to the optimum integration of the encoders into the motors. Within seconds, for example, automatic startup of the drive has taken place on the inverter. In addition to the encoder, condition monitoring functions of the drive are also digitised.

  • Do you need position feedback despite tight installation conditions or restrictions regarding the overall length of the drive? Our built-in encoders are your solution. These are integrated into the drive design without any additional length or additional interfering contours.
  • If two systemically different encoder information from the drive is required to fulfil special functional safety requirements in the machine or system, you can combine our built-in and add-on encoders in one drive and use 2 encoders simultaneously.
  • Synchronise drive units mechanically via the 2nd shaft end of the driving motors. The built-in encoders now also enable position feedback without having to redesign the placement of the drives in the machine or system.
  • Built-in encoders do not require extensive service and are particularly robust, as a wear-free, magnetic measuring method is used.
