In the next part of our meet the team series, we’re speaking to James Scott, a Digital Services and Condition Monitoring Specialist, here at SEW-EURODRIVE UK.

James has been with us for nearly a year now, but he has over 13 years of engineering experience altogether, having spent time working in the warehouse automation space.

Continue reading to find out about James’ day-to-day role, and the experience he’s gained, as well as his hobbies and favourite food.

What is your job role at SEW-EURODRIVE, and what are your main responsibilities?

I am a Digital Services and Condition Monitoring Specialist. I look after a product called DriveRadar®, which is a piece of condition monitoring software for our drives and motors. Imagine you’ve got an engine light on your car – it's similar to that but on an industrial scale, so it tells you where the potential problems are, before they occur, so they can be fixed pre-emptively.

How many years of experience do you have working in the drives industry?

This is my first job within the drives industry, but I’ve been an engineer for the past 13 years.

What did you do prior to working at SEW-EURODRIVE?

I was a field service engineer for a company called Imperium Automation, mainly working in the warehouse automation space doing electrical controls, repairs, mechanical, hydraulic schematics. Anything that was broken, we’d go and fix it.

What skills did you gain in your previous role, and how have they benefitted your career?

I’ve worked with SEW drives throughout my career, installing, removing, repairing and replacing them. This means I already came into SEW-EURODRIVE with great knowledge of the products on offer, which I’ve been able to build on in my time here so far.

Do you have any particular qualifications?

I’m a qualified maintenance engineer, with a mechanical electrical background, and I’ve done multiple electrical controls courses throughout my career.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?

I’ve always been told that for most things, you’re only really remembered by your failures, not your successes. So, if you don’t have many people talking about your failures, then that’s a success in itself!

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A big chicken madras, with a pint of Cobra!

What gets you up in the morning (other than an alarm clock)?

With this job, I enjoy getting up and exploring what I can do with the product that I work with.

What are your hobbies?

I’m an avid petrol head, and I also go touring all over Europe on my motorbike.
